How To Install A Bushing Without A Press

You do not have any access to a hydraulic press, as a few of us do, and it is a simple and inexpensive alternative to installing a suspension bushing. Using tools, we had to lie around and a hardware store trip. Bearing manufacturing company built a homemade bushing installer. That efficiently and quickly does the job.
The most important thing, the hardware cost was not that much costly. In this article, we show you how to make your bushing installer. Give some dos and don'ts to complete your installation smoothly as possible.

Removing the OE bushing

Before installing a new bearing bushing, you have to remove the old one first. If you require any help to remove your OE bushing, check how to burn out the bushing correctly. Ensure to consult your installation instructions before removing the outer shell. Like a lot of bushing requirements because of the using OE shell.
The bushing with a new outer shell, below we mentioned, how a bearing manufacturer installed a bushing without a hydraulic press.

Sand and polish the housing

Once you remove the OE bushing and shell, it should leave you with an empty housing. It is the best idea to sand and polish the housing's inner diameter before installing anything to clean any corrosion.
Or also clean containment and rust that may have gathered. The last thing you want as a sharp edge damages your new bushing when you installed it. In addition, clean and polished housing will help reduce the friction and allow you to use the new bushing, which can be installed more easily.

Bushing installer parts

  • socket or pipe

Use a set of sockets if you have a set that you can use. If you don't have one, then do not spend hundreds of dollars on the set. You can do the same thing with the two metal pipes. You need a piece of pipe with the same diameter as the bronze sleeve bearings bushings. The second pipe needs a large diameter that will brace itself when installing the bushings into it.
  • Use coarse thread, not fine thread

The more threads mean, the less force needed to complete a turn on a thread. Reducing the strength required to push the bushing in. but the fine threads were weaker and failed it under stress. The coarse thread is stronger and more durable than requirements as much force as installing a bushing.
  • Use the largest diameter bolt

The bolt will have a lot of stress to install the bushing so that you will need a strong bolt. But the bolt will have to fit through the inner sleeve of the bushing. Ensure to get the largest diameter bolts as allowed by your internal sleeve size.
  • Long grade bolts have little threading

Once we threaded the nut down, it touched the Socket, with one or two turns of thread left. Once the torqued the nut at the end of the thread, we took the nut off and add more washers to reset the bolt to the end of the thread.

Tricks and tips before you install

  • Lubricate bolts

This is the critical step to success; the nut is hot because of all the friction. The heat of it softens the metal and makes the rod too weak to install the bearing bushing. According to the grad, 8 bolts, we lubricate the thread. It reduced the friction, heat and allowed metal to stay strong.
  • Housing lubricate with oil

Lubricate the housing with oil; the oil helped the bushing slide by reducing friction. Additionally, a coat of oil will protect the polished, fresh metal from corrosion.
  • Freeze the bushing

Put the bushing in the freezer for one day before the installation to help contact the bushing. It did not mean that bushing is a drop-in, but even it slightly decreases in the bushing diameter, making all the difference.

Installing the bushing

Now you are ready for install, use a vice grip to hold the tight nuts. Then torque the other nut with a jerk. The Socket pushes the bushing, the opposite direction of the Socket acts as a brace. Pressing up against the essential housing presses the bushing into the housing. After a few minutes, the bushing is entirely in the housing without a press.

Conclusion:

Once you have the right tools, the process is straightforward. We even used the same tools to remove the bushing and then put it back. If you know more about the tools, contact Hi-bond Pvt. Ltd. who help you in any trouble to install the bushing without the press.
